ABOUT HIM

Giuliano Dal Molin in the studio

Giuliano Dal Molin was born in Schio, province of Vicenza, Italy, in 1960; he lives and works in San Vito di Leguzzano, also in the Italian province of Vicenza.

His path in terms of training and experimentation in the visual arts led Dal Molin towards modern and contemporary art, only to identify, in 1987, his own personal direction. Initially, his works focused on the dialogue between materials such as metals, powders and pigments. Reliefs and basic shapes – concave/convex – tend almost to nullify the colour, of which only hints remain… “traces of the act of painting”.

His works were chosen to take part in group exhibitions at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation in Venice in 1984, 1989 and 1991; in 1992 he boasted his own personal room at that Foundation and in 1993 his works were present at DETERRITORIALE at the 45th Venice Biennale.

In 1996 he presented the “Cementi” series. In 1997, colour appeared strongly in his works, initially through monochrome backgrounds and later with intense contrasts and profound dissonances. During those years, his work tended to expand into the surrounding space, often becoming a polyptych no longer on the wall but resting on the floor, concentrating on the continuous relationship between elements. His vertical and horizontal shapes seek dialogue between planes, curves and lights, in a constant close relationship between painting and sculpture.

Direct construction is integral in creating his works: a concrete, painted form is given to the support which comes alive thanks to light. As the artist says: “The work develops on the idea of space, perceived as shape and colour. It is no longer just sculpture or painting, in the conventional sense, but a form composed of colour or white light. […] Light becomes fundamental, it gives life to the work, transforms it. […] All in an attempt to seek an interior dimension and silence”. His work is a constant investigation ultimately to achieve rigorous and essential forms which are then reflected on concepts of full and empty, constantly evolving.

His ideas of previous years evolved during the 2000s, with research developed on three-dimensionality, which led the artist to investigate architectural shapes. The exhibitions that ensued during this period revealed his inclination towards the study of space: the artist seeks a synergic relationship with the forces already present at the site, measuring and interpreting them. His works are designed by virtue of the strong bond both between them and their surrounding environment, in reciprocal and continuous reinforcement.

His subsequent installations gave new chromatic vigour to clean environments, with a rhythm and a structure marking the walls, giving them volume. This phase was accompanied by careful research of colour, starting from the history of painting only then to manifest in three-dimensional works, projects and designs, the result of a synthesis process aimed at removing anything that is excess and superfluous to give a louder voice to colour and shapes.

In 2016 Giuliano Dal Molin was welcomed to Naples with a personal exhibition at the Lia Rumma Gallery. In 2017 he took part in the group exhibition “Emotions of color in art” at Castello di Rivoli in Turin.

In 2024 Giuliano Dal Molin held his second solo show at the Lia Rumma Gallery in Milan.
